Living in a Costa Rican village 10 years ago, Betsy Haley Hershey became close to the family portrayed in this film. Her unique window into their lives and changing situation gave her the impetus to make her first film.
Hershey holds two degrees, in fine arts and Spanish. She spent more than two years filming this extended family in both countries.
The feature-length film Ni Aquí, Ni Allá (Not Here, Not There) premiered last week at the Costa Rica International Film Festival. It has won the Silver Palm Award at the 2009 Mexico International Film Festival and the Silver Screen Award at the 2009 Nevada Film Festival.
